A director, photographer and storyteller working in the music, theatre and performance world, exploring heritage to address ecological and ideological themes.

Sam Vanoverschelde is a director (Master in Audiovisual Arts - RITCS, 1997) and visual artist that kicked off in the VJ and live AV scene with the Visual Kitchen collective. Playing the underground scene as well as the established events, they produced imagery for pop music as well as the contemporary classical world. He took part in producing the Cimatics festival, presenting the up-and-coming AV and digital arts scene to the Brussels public. In 2008, Sam teamed up with director Davis Freeman and they’ve been regularly working together ever since, making devious political and documentary theatre.

With a family history linked to the Flemish movement during WW1, he’s regularly engaged in that research field, as a board member of the Museum aan de IJzer but also as a director for projects in that historical domain: building bridges in time to modern themes like identity, ecology an ideology. He investigates how old and new stories can be told straight from the archive boxes. By creating his own ‘Archive of Untold Stories’ or addressing issues on climate and society with ‘the Extinction Survival Archive’ and the ‘Survival Social Club’, the line of work is turning more towards collaborative and participatory projects.
